Mentee Responsibilities, Expectations, Acknowledgement, & Code of Conduct
What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is an important component of developing and sustaining a satisfying professional career. Mentoring enables each of us to grow, learn, transform, and accomplish goals in education and career. Whether you are a senior educator, a world-renowned researcher, or still in the early stages of your professional career, mentoring benefits you by building a dynamic community that nurtures the success of individuals as they pursue personal and professional career goals. Given the complexity of education and various industries today, students need a team of mentors, each of whom can provide specialized guidance for the next wave of leaders.
Why Have a Mentor?
Having a mentor can mean the difference between success and failure. A ship can have an important influence on personal development, career guidance, and career choice to name a few.
- Mentoring can help to ensure success in a wide variety of situations, including addressing questions such as:
- how to develop an education plan
- how to find needed resources
- By having a guide, coach, or ally, mentors can answer their mentee's questions as they arise, ensuring steady progress and completion of project milestones.
- By serving in the role of advocate, a mentor can help a mentee navigate the terrain of college and career choice in order to move forward professionally.
- By providing knowledgeable and strategic advice, a mentor can serve to empower a mentee to pursue an innovative opportunity. The interest and support of a mentor often provide the mentee with both the confidence and practical knowledge to undertake a new and exciting challenge.
Setting goals and developing a plan
- Work together to develop an academic plan that includes short-term goals, long-term goals, and a period for reaching these goals.
- Agree on a time to update progress.
- Meet monthly to formally discuss the mentee's progress as well as any additional training and experiences needed to achieve the defined goals.
- Agree to modify the academic plan if necessary.
